The name “Winchester” became synonymous with “repeating rifle” in the last third of the 19th century thanks in no small part to this famous cartridge, the first modern centerfire brass cartridge mass produced for the commercial market. It’s 143 years old, it’s been used to take everything from bunnies to bears, and it’s still going strong. It’s Winchester’s 44-40.
